Latest company cases about Abnormal Fuel Return of Caterpillar Diesel Injector (injector) 0R-0471, 0R-3190 (General Part Number 0R-3002, 0R0471) Leads to Increased Fuel Consumption
(Reporter: Michael Brown) With the rising cost of diesel fuel, the fuel consumption of equipment has become a major concern for users. However, recently, many users who use Caterpillar diesel injectors (injector) with part numbers 0R-0471, 0R-3190 (general part numbers 0R-3002, 0R0471) have reported that their equipment has an abnormal increase in fuel return, which has led to a significant increase in fuel consumption and brought economic losses to the users. Reporters conducted an investigation to find out the causes and solutions of this problem.
Sarah Miller, the manager of a quarry in California, told reporters that her quarry has 5 Caterpillar loaders, all equipped with 0R-0471 injectors (general part numbers 0R-3002, 0R0471). In the past two months, the fuel consumption of these loaders has increased by nearly 20%, and the fuel return pipe has obvious oil leakage. "We checked the fuel tank and fuel filter, but found no problems. Later, we invited a professional maintenance technician to inspect, and it was found that the fuel return of the injector was abnormal," Sarah said. The technician told her that the excessive fuel return not only increased fuel consumption but also reduced the power of the equipment.
Robert Davis, a senior technician at a Caterpillar maintenance service center, explained that the normal fuel return of Caterpillar 0R-0471 and 0R-3190 injectors (general part numbers 0R-3002, 0R0471) is within a certain range. If the fuel return exceeds this range, it means that there is a fault in the injector. "The main causes of abnormal fuel return are wear of the needle valve, excessive clearance between the needle valve body and the injector shell, and wear of the valve plate," Robert said.
Robert took a faulty 0R-3190 injector (general part number 0R-3002) as an example to explain to reporters. After disassembling the injector, it was found that the needle valve was severely worn, and the clearance between the needle valve body and the injector shell was much larger than the standard value. "When the injector works, part of the fuel will flow back through the clearance between the needle valve body and the injector shell without participating in combustion, resulting in an increase in fuel return," Robert said. In addition, the wear of the valve plate will also lead to the failure of the fuel pressure control, resulting in abnormal fuel return.
To further verify the impact of abnormal fuel return on fuel consumption, Robert conducted a test. He installed a normal 0R-0471 injector (general part numbers 0R-3002, 0R0471) and a faulty injector with abnormal fuel return on the same loader, and tested the fuel consumption under the same working conditions. The test results showed that the fuel consumption of the loader equipped with the faulty injector was 18% higher than that of the loader equipped with the normal injector. "This shows that abnormal fuel return will significantly increase fuel consumption, which will bring great economic pressure to users," Robert said.
Robert also pointed out that abnormal fuel return will not only increase fuel consumption but also affect the normal operation of the engine. "Excessive fuel return will reduce the fuel injection pressure, delay the fuel injection time, and lead to incomplete combustion of fuel, which will not only reduce the power of the engine but also increase the emission of pollutants," he said. In addition, the leaked fuel from the fuel return pipe may also cause safety hazards such as fire.
In response to the abnormal fuel return problem of Caterpillar 0R-0471 and 0R-3190 injectors (general part numbers 0R-3002, 0R0471), Robert put forward corresponding solutions. First, regularly inspect the injector, and replace the worn needle valve pair and valve plate in a timely manner. Second, strictly follow the maintenance manual to calibrate the fuel return of the injector to ensure that it is within the standard range. Third, use high-quality fuel and replace the fuel filter regularly to avoid impurities entering the injector and causing wear.
