The Problem Developed During Storage, Not During Generator Operation
A facility in Seychelles maintained standby diesel generators for emergency power. The engines accumulated relatively few operating hours, yet technicians repeatedly found dark, sticky material in fuel filters during scheduled maintenance.
Because the generators operated only periodically, injector wear initially appeared unlikely. Removed injectors also showed no clear pattern of abrasive damage that would explain the repeated filter restriction.
Attention shifted from operating hours to the fuel that remained stored for long periods in a warm, humid island environment.
The technical investigation centred on contamination developing at the fuel-water interface inside storage tanks.
A Filter Sample Changed the Direction of the Investigation
The deposits were not dry mineral particles. They had a soft, irregular appearance and collected around sections of the filter media.
Technicians documented the material rather than immediately replacing another filter.
Fuel was then sampled from different tank levels.
Upper Fuel Layer
The upper sample appeared comparatively clear.
Tank Bottom
The bottom sample contained water and heavier sediment.
Fuel-Water Interface
The intermediate area showed the strongest concentration of dark material.
This distribution was important because it suggested that contamination was associated with stored-fuel conditions rather than entering evenly with each fuel delivery.

Transfer equipment, water-separation components and filter housings were inspected and cleaned as appropriate.
Only after the stored-fuel source had been addressed were final filters installed and the engines prepared for controlled operation.
The injectors were evaluated where necessary, but they were not automatically replaced because no injector-specific damage had been established.
A New Maintenance Record Was Added
The Seychelles team began recording more than generator operating hours.
Its standby fuel record now considered storage duration, visible water findings, filter condition, tank inspection and results from periodic loaded generator operation.
This provided a better picture of fuel-system condition between emergency events.
Technical Lesson
The independent technical core of this case is fuel-water interface contamination during long-term diesel storage.
A standby generator can experience serious fuel-system contamination even when its injectors have relatively little operating time.
For island facilities in Seychelles, stored-fuel condition, tank water management and filter evidence can be more informative than engine hours alone when sticky deposits repeatedly return.
