The Complaint Only Appeared Under Load

A diesel vehicle arrived at the workshop with a complaint that was difficult to reproduce at idle.

The engine started normally, idled smoothly, and responded reasonably well during light acceleration. However, when the vehicle was operated under heavier load, engine power dropped and the driver reported hesitation.

Because the symptom appeared during fuel demand, the injectors were initially suspected.

The workshop decided to reproduce the failure before replacing any injection components.

Idle Testing Did Not Reveal the Problem

At idle, the engine showed no obvious cylinder imbalance.

There was no clear evidence that one injector was behaving differently from the others.

The Test Was Moved to Higher Load

Instead of immediately blaming the high-pressure components, the workshop moved upstream.

The low-pressure circuit was checked for:

  • fuel filter restriction;
  • blocked supply lines;
  • tank-side contamination;
  • weak feed pressure;
  • air entering the supply circuit.

Filter Restriction Became the Key Finding

The fuel filter showed a level of restriction that was not obvious during idle operation.

At low fuel demand, enough fuel could still pass through the filter for the engine to run normally.

Under load, however, the required fuel volume increased.

The restricted filter could no longer supply the high-pressure system consistently.

This created a symptom that closely resembled poor injector delivery.

Why the Injectors Were Not Replaced

The workshop compared the symptom with the fuel-supply data before approving any injector work.

Because the problem followed engine load rather than a specific cylinder, a supply-side restriction became a stronger explanation.

After the restricted fuel-filter condition was corrected and the low-pressure circuit was checked again, the engine maintained normal power under load.
